What is basil contraindicated for?

Long treatments with basil essential oil are contraindicated due to its toxic effects.

Scientific studies warn that high doses of estragole (like it happens when using basil essential oil) may be toxic because of its carcinogenic potential values.

Basil should not be used during  pregnancy

The whole plant is rich in essential oil (0.2 to 1%), primarily estragole (55%). The estragole can cause uterine contractions, so that basil is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Can you use basil during  Lactation?

It is not known if basil is safe during breast-feeding.

Avoid using basil with dermatitis or redness of the skin

The essential oil can be irritating and should not be used if there is dermatitis, wounds or rashes on the skin.

Do not take basil  when having  digestive ulcers and gastritis

Basil is contraindicated in case of gastritis of digestive ulcer, since, internally, essential oils may irritate the digestive mucosa.

Basil in contraindicated in case of intestinal diseases

In people who suffer from intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease or irritable bowel, basil can trigger an outbreak, because of its aromatic components.
