CORONARY DISEASE

CHARACTERISTICS OF CORONARY DISEASE

What is a coronary disease?

Coronary disease is caused by the obstruction of the coronary arteries, that are those that carry blood to the heart.

When a blood clot blocks the flow to a part of the heart, it produces a heart attack or myocardial infarction.

When this obstruction is not complete, angina pectoris can take place.

Symptoms of coronary disease

chest pain
Chest pain is one of the main symptoms of coronary disease

  • Sometimes it does not produce any symptoms, especially in the elderly and the diabetes patients.

  • Chest pain, a little to the left of the sternum with radiation to left arm, jaw, neck or back. (When the pain lasts longer than 20 minutes is a signal that can be considered as a heart attack rather than angina, which at the beginning can show similar symptoms)

  • Flatulence sensation.

  • Acute pain, weight or oppression in the chest, sensation of breathlessness.

  • Sometimes, there can be other symptoms, such as:

  • Dizziness

  • Vomits

  • Excessive sweating

Causes of coronary disease

Coronary artery disease occurs primarily because it exists in the coronary arteries a condition called atherosclerosis, caused by the buildup or plaque in an artery that leads to its narrowing. These plates are made of fat and cholesterol that stick to the walls of the arteries. They become hard because other components adhere to them, specially calcium.

This may lead to the appearance of a clot, formed by the detachment of some arterial wall plaque (thrombus) that clogs the blood flow. Because of it, some part of the heart does not become irrigated, so it dies.

Other factors that can cause heart disease are infections caused by certain microorganisms, birth defects or arterial spasms.

Among the factors that predispose to the development of a coronary disease we would mention the following:
