Contraindications of glucomannan

  • Diabetes: glucomannan lowers sugar and insulin levels after eating. In the case of people with diabetes, this supplement may influence their insulin or medication guidelines, so special care and medical supervision is required.
  • People with digestive disorders: glucomannan can cause outbreaks and digestive disorders to people suffering from dumping syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, etc. Occasionally it may be a recommended supplement to treat too liquid stool, but only under medical prescription.
  • Long treatments: glucomannan treatment should not be perpetuated. Continued use may lead to a deficit of fat-soluble vitamins K, A, D, E and other nutrients.
  • Under 12 years: continued use of glucomannan may cause nutritional deficits.

Precautions before taking glucomannan

Glucomannan is often sold in supplements in the form of capsules or powder in pharmacies or natural products stores. Its use requires that we drink a lot of water.

  • Do not take glucomannan before surgery. The hypoglycaemic effect may interfere with anesthesia.
  • Glucomannan supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before any medication.

People with diabetes should be especially cautious. Glucomannan can affect sugar levels, and influence insulin patterns.

Glucomannan during pregnancy and lactation

Do NOT take glucomannan if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Not enough is known about the use of glucomannan during pregnancy and lactation.
