Characteristics of hemochromatosis
HEMOCHROMATOSIS is a metabolic disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of iron in the body.
It is a genetically based disease, which manifests itself in men between 30 and 50 years of age and in women from 50. Hemochromatosis or ZE syndrome if not treated properly and promptly, can severely affect the body.
It usually affects first the liver, which due to the iron accumulation, increases in size and can end up causing diseases in the body such as cirrhosis, hepatic insufficiency or liver cancer. In addition to the liver affects the body in general which is often the cause of other disorders such as:
- Arthritis by iron accumulation in the joints.
- Diabetes, by accumulation of too much iron in the pancreas.

- Habitual Fatigue
- Greater facility to contract diseases by virus
- Heart problems, due to excess of accumulated iron in this organ.
Causes of hemochromatosis
- Alcohol abuse is a factor that can trigger this disease.
- Certain types of anemia, such as thalassemia.
- Excessive iron ingestion, generally through supplements.
Symptoms of hemochromatosis
Among the most characteristic symptoms of this disease are: normal fatigue, abdominal pain, lack of strength, decreased testicular common infections, weight loss, lack of libido, loss of body hair, dark skin, frequent urination, itchy skin, etc.
In the presence of several of these symptoms should visit a doctor to diagnose the possible existence of this disease.
Diagnosis is made through a physical examination prior to determine the presence of changes in skin color or enlarged liver and spleen. It may require further blood tests and even a liver biopsy.

The treatment of this disease is primarily focused on the use of regular blood removal to remove excess iron from the body. This removal, once iron levels are stabilized, will be kept in regular periods for the disease does not appear again.
