What is loquat?

Medlar, loquat, Japanese medlar, European medlar, Japanese plum is a fruit tree of the Rosaceae family.

Although they share the same common name, there are two distinct species of fruit trees that produce loquats.

This article makes reference to the Japanese medlar (= loquat) (Eriobotrya japonica), which is the most common species; and there is also the European medlar (Mespilus germanica).

Is medlar toxic?

No, medlar is an edible fruit and its pulp has no toxic components.

However, its seeds are toxic, like other fruits of the same family as the seed of cherries, or apricots.

The seed of this plant is toxic because it contains cyanogenic glycosides or hydrogen cyanide, characteristically showing a bitter flavor.

Poisoning is caused by ingestion of bones or seeds.

Symptoms of intoxication by loquat seeds ingestion

Symptoms include:

  • Breath odor of bitter almonds
  • Choking and cyanotic color, in which case you should see a doctor urgently and immediately.
  • Although in small doses it has been shown to stimulate respiration and improve digestion, its consumption in large quantities can cause respiratory failure and even death.

Loquat during pregnancy and lactation

This fruit is a healthy food, rich in sugars, fiber and especially carotene (natural antioxidants). Medlar is a healthy food taken during pregnancy.

Do not take the seeds or tea prepared from these, as they are toxic.
