What it is vervain and what is it used for?

Vervain is a plant of Verbenaceae family growing throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

The plant contains iridoid glycosides with galactogogue, digestive, sedative and vulnerary properties.

It is used to relieve pain, trauma, sciatica, back pain or headaches. Also as a digestive tonic for poor appetite and indigestion.

Contraindications of vervain

- Pregnancy: Verbena has been for years a plant to accelerate childbird, so it should not be taken during pregnancy. It can cause abortion because of its oxytocic effect or uterine stimulant.

- Female disorders: uterine stimulant effect makes is unsuitable for women with menorrhagia (excessive vaginal bleeding) or endometriosis.

- Medicines for High Blood Pressure: It is reported that the plant could interfere with some medications for hypertension. Due to the lack of toxicological studies, caution is advised regarding its use. Always consult your doctor if in doubt.
