RETINAL DETACHMENT

RETINAL DETACHMENT

Characteristics of retinal detachment

The retina is a membrane that is at the back of the eye and whose mission is to receive the light beams passing through the lens, cornea and aqueous and vitreous humor. Photoreceptors in the retina send signals to the brain through the optic nerves.

When a gap in the retina of the eye is produced, eye fluids penetrate into the choroid and manage to separate the retina from this layer. Since the choroid is a layer that supplies the retina providing adequate nutrients, the separation of the two layers, if not corrected in time, prevents the proper irrigation and produces irreversible damage to the retina.

Retinal detachments require immediate action within 12 or 24 hours after they have been taken place.

Symptoms of retinal detachment

The main symptoms of retinal detachment are: vision of flashing lights on the periphery or outside of eyesight. Blurred vision. Vision with translucent stains. Progressive blindness from the outside toward the center. Overall vision lost in one eye. Heaviness sensation on one eye. Straight lines being perceived as curved. Etc.

It can sometimes be confused with the floaters (myodesopsia)

Causes of retinal detachment

The main causes that can cause retinal detachment are:

- Spontaneous detachment, which occurs without any apparent reason.

- Trauma: Some hit, accident or trauma that affects the eye.

- Surgical procedures: Eye surgery may be the cause for retinal detachments, so, for example, 2% of the operations performed to treat cataracts bring forth this disorder.

- Disease: Some diseases like diabetes or hypertension, myopia, diabetic retinopathy, arterial lesions, or tumors, may be responsible for this disorder. Severe myopia (more than 6 or 7 diopters) is responsible for almost 70% of cases of retinal detachment.

- Heredity: Some people, who have family history of the disorder, are more prone to retinal detachment.

- Stress: The conditions of permanent stress may favor it.

- Free radicals: A poor diet, aggressive environmental conditions and oxidation of the body itself are the main causes of the appearance of free radicals, for which the vision is one of the most sensitive organs and the most affected.

Diagnosis and treatment of retinal detachment

An eye problem first requires a previous visit to a specialist who will provide you a diagnosis about it. This is especially required for retinal detachment whose appropriate and quick treatment is needed to avoid the visual loss in the affected eye.

To diagnose this disorder, the doctor or ophthalmologist may perform a series of specific tests such as an ophthalmoscopy, an ocular pressure testing, a refraction testing, photographs and retinal scans, etc.

A laser technique for stitching the retina before it is fully detached can be applied. In some cases, to solve the problem, some surgery procedures can be used (Scleral buckle surgery, Pneumatic retinopexy, or Vitrectomy are the more common ones)

Generally, retinal detachments can be cured, although in some cases there is loss of vision in the affected eye. However, without a prompt and proper treatment, retinal detachment leads to blindness.

The natural treatment of retinal detachment involves the use of a number of natural remedies that can prevent or ameliorate it.
