Types of herpes

The main types of herpes are:

- Labial herpes ( cold sores) : It is produced by the Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV type 1) . It is the reason for blisters on the lips, face, mouth, nose and ears. It is a chronic and infectious disease caused by a virus that lives in the facial nerves.

- Genital Herpes: It is produced by both the Herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV type 1) and by Herpes simplex type 2 ( HSV type 2) , the latter being the one that produces 90% of infections. It is a type of herpes that is transmitted by sexual contact and is gaining a higher degree of infection among young people.

Genital herpes appears on the genitals (penis and anus or near it in men / vagina, cervix and anus in women) Pimples that become blisters and these, in turn, burst and become crusty. This process begins as an initial stinging, changing to itching pain afterwards.

Cold sores and genital herpes can be easily spread through kissing, caressing or skin contact. Sexual relations are a major cause of infection. The contact between genitalia, vaginal or anal penetration or contact of the mouth with sex facilitate the transmission of this virus. The reason lies in the genital areas by nature wet and the presence of mucus facilitates infection. For this reason mouth is so sensitive .

Infections with these types of herpes occur not only when pimples , blisters, or open wounds are present but when the individual is infected, often without knowing it. This is the reason why these viruses are being expanded every day. Sex allow infection. In addition, through oral sex, it can spread from the oral form to to genital one or vice versa.

- Herpes Zoster: Caused by the varicella virus. Although the disease was fought in childhood, the virus remained dormant in nerve cells and takes profit of the body having low defenses to reproduce. (Cold, flu, stress, aging, AIDS, etc.)

Herpes zoster is actually an opportunistic virus that exploits the problems of immunity for his attack. In this sense, is not considered a contagious disease itself in most cases, except those who have not had contact with the chickenpox virus when they were young.

Prevention of herpes

Prevention in this type of diseases is very difficult because the infection can occur without the carrier showing visible signs of infection. Despite this, the contagion is easier when there are blisters or sores, in which case one should avoid physical contact with them.

Because sexual transmission is the most normal way of spreading genital herpes, it is prudent to use a condom when someone does not have sufficient knowledge of his/her couple. One must avoid sex when there is a clear evidence that the partner is infected.

People with severe immune problems, such as those undergoing cancer therapies, or pregnant women should strictly avoid contact with people showing signs of herpes .

Women who have to give birth, in case of personally having active episodes of genital herpes, should make use of a a caesarean section to avoid its transmission to the baby.
