It mainly affects adults and does not usually extend beyond the irritated area unless it touches another part of the body. It occurs primarily in the feet, hands or groins, offering symptoms of burning, itching and redness.

It is characterized by the appearance of white or yellow scales of oily nature. Among its principal manifestations we have what is known as dandruff or seborrhea. If it occurs in babies, it is called milk crust.

  • Stasis dermatitis: it is a type of dermatitis that affects the lower extremities. This is a problem caused by poor circulation in the legs and is manifested in the form of scaly skin and, in more serious cases, the presence of swelling or ulcers.

  • Nummular dermatitis (eczema): A type of dermatitis that occurs round spots that produce a lot of itching on the hands, legs, arms and buttocks. Sometimes it produces flakes or blisters that give rise to purulent crusts. It is a type of event that usually occurs in winter in people over 55 years of age and especially those with dry skin.

Causes of dermatitis

The causes of the dermatitis are varied and depend on the type of dermatitis. Among the most common ones, we can mention the following:

  • Allergies: The allergy to certain substances, either by contact or ingestion, can produce reactions in the skin. Many plants are known to cause dermatitis because they are irritating to the skin. Some contain ingredients such as oxalic acid, as the case of the wild arum. Others, like rue, have furocoumarins with phototoxic properties, and can cause dermatitis when the skin is exposed to contact with the sun. (See more toxic plants)

  • Chemicals: Other times, contact with chemicals at home or at work, is responsible for these reactions on the skin. Among the many products that can cause dermatitis are: detergents, cleaning products, chlorine water, soaps, shampoos and even medicines.

  • Metals contact: Not less known is induced dermatitis allergy to metals, even some metals used in jewelry such as gold or nickel. Allergy to certain textile fibers such as wool, can also trigger it.

  • Inadequate food: Too many animal fats, alcohol, pasta, chocolate, etc., may trigger some cases of dermatitis.

  • Infantile eczema: Produced by eating certain foods.

  • Heat: Excessive heat, along with the use of certain tight clothes may be the cause of eczema or skin rashes.

  • Genetics: Many times environmental factors with genetic predisposition are responsible for the appearance of dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis occurs when the affected person tends to produce excessive sebum by sebaceous glands, although some anomalies, such as diabetes, allergy or deficiency of vitamin B can aggravate it.

  • Stress: In many cases, stress is a trigger or aggravating for dermatitis.

Diagnostics of dermatitis

The diagnosis of dermatitis is conducted through a medical control of the affected areas of skin.

To diagnose the reasons for the dermatitis a series of tests can be carried out by the skin specialist. For example, the skin comes into contact with certain substances to see what kind of reactions can occur and thus determine the exact cause that lead to these processes.

Other times it may be necessary a microscopic analysis of tissue samples.
