Side effects of glucomannan
Glucomannan supplements can be an effective temporary help to treat cravings for eating, overweight or obesity, some cases of bulimia nervosa, to reduce cholesterol, to prevent cardiovascular disease and in cases of occasional or chronic constipation.
Continued use of glucomannan supplements
Glucomannan has side effects that, perpetuated over time, can have nutritional repercussions:
Malabsorption of nutrients: because glucomannan fiber captures bile salts in the intestine, causes a lower absorption of the vitamins K, A, D, E.
Glucomane is often sold in supplements in the form of capsules or powder in pharmacies or natural products stores. Its use requires that we drink a lot of water.
Flatulence and abdominal discomfort: glucomannan is a type of fiber with a probiotic effect, which can produce flatulence, bloating and abdominal discomfort. In these cases, glucomannan must be suppressed from the diet and progressively reintroduced into the diet. It is also important to accompany the diet of probiotic foods, such as acid-lactic bacteria from yogurt.
Malabsorption of drugs: glucomannan interferes with the absorption of oral antidiabetics, drugs that reduce intestinal transit as anticholinergic drugs and calcium antagonists. Take glucomannan at least 1 hour before your medication.
Hypoglycemic effect: Glucomannan can reduce blood sugar and insulin levels after eating. In case of people with diabetes, a doctor should monitor or correct insulin or medication guidelines.
Try to increase your diet in foods rich in soluble fiber, and do not perpetuate glucomannan treatment. It has been proven that 10g. of fiber supplements have the same effect on appetite reduction as 10g. of applesauce.
