Types of intestinal diseases:

Intestinal diseases are those affecting the intestine. They can affect one or more parts. Among all, we will mention the following, grouped by the affected portion of intestine:

The main diseases of the small intestine are:

  • Diarrhea : Abnormal condition of the intestines in which abnormally frequent and fluid feces occur, generally accompanied with bowel movements and with little presence of solids.

  • Constipation: Storage of fecal waste in the intestine for more than three days or as the presence of abnormal hard feces which can cause pain when defecating

  • Enteritis: inflammation of the small intestine.

  • Duodenal ulcer: Lesion of the mucous membranes lining the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine

  • Duodenitis, Inflammation of the duodenum .

  • Gastroenteritis: The internal membrane of the intestine or stomach becomes swollen because of the action of virus, bacteria or parasites.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Chronic inflamation of intestine, referring to Crhon's disease that can affect to all the digestive tube, and ulcerative colitis that only affects to the large intestine.
  • Crohn's disease: Chronic inflammation of all the digestive tube with the appearance of frequent or continuous intermittent episodes of diarrhea alternating with possible periods of constipation.

  • Small bowel obstruction: Blockage that prevents food or liquid to pass through the small intestine or the large intestine

  • Intestinal hemorrhages: Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract

  • Inguinal hernia: Part of the abdominal contents, such as the intestines, are projected through an abdominal wall that is not very resistant

  • Gallbladder stones: Although they appear either in the gallbladder, the bile duct or in any part of the biliary system, they can produce some symptoms in the intestine.

  • Pancreatitis: Disease characterized by the swelling and inflammation of the pancreas, that can produce some symptoms in the intestine
  • Flatulence : An excess of intestinal gases accumulated in the digestive system
  • Hernia hiatus: The introduction of part of the stomach into the chest through the hole in the diaphragm muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen

  • Cancer: Cancerous cells in the small intestine

The main diseases of the large intestine are:

  • Crohn's disease: Chronic inflammation of the intestine with the appearance of frequent or continuous intermittent episodes of diarrhea alternating with possible periods of constipation

  • Syndrome of the irritable bowel. Non inflammatory disease consisting of an hypersensitivity of the colon that produces a series of unpleasant reactions, especially after eating and at times when the person is nervous or stressed

  • Diverticulosis: The presence of one or more bags (= diverticula) in the large intestine.

  • Diverticulitis : Swelling or inflammation produced in one or more of the bags (= diverticula) in large intestine

  • Intestinal hemorrhages: Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract

  • Appendicitis: Inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch located at the beginning of the large intestine
