Reasons not to take turmeric
Who should avoid taking Turmeric?
- Gallstones: One should not take turmeric in case of gallstones or gallbladder stones.
- If you take antithrombotic or anticoagulant medication: turmeric may increase the effects of antithrombotic medication or anticoagulant, so DO NOT take turmeric supplements during medication.
Some drugs are aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, warfarin (Coumadin).
- Before surgery: turmeric can affect blood clotting. Do not take turmeric if an operation is pending.
- Children under 3 years: turmeric supplements are not suitable for infants under 3 years.
Turmeric during pregnancy and lactation
Turmeric may have emmenagogue effects. It is not recommended to take turmeric supplements if you are a pregnant women.
There is insufficient information to determine the safety of turmeric during lactation.
