Is the sweetener of stevia safe for health?

Stevia fresh plant (Stevia rebaudiana) and the products extracted from it, including stevioside and rebaudioside A, are safe for health.

Stevia is a noncaloric sweetener that has been researched for over 25 years and has been approved as safe ingredient by different independent laboratories.

It appears on the GRAS lists of the United States (Generally Recognised As Safe), considering its use is suitable as a sweetener in food and beverages.

The Expert Committee on Food Additives of FAO / WHO (JECFA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have determined stevia is safe for health as food additive.

Its Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) has been determined at 4 mg / kg.

The sweetener stevia has been approved by the European Commission (EC) for use in foods and beverages, such as published in Regulation 1333/2008.
