Natural treatment of astigmatism

Characteristics of astigmatism

Astigmatism is an eye disorder in which the person possessing it has a blurred, double or distorted vision both of near and distant objects

It is a disorder that is usually detected in childhood and can remain stable or increase as people get older, but what usually happens is that it generally remains stable.

Most people have some degree of astigmatism, but the real problem appears when the distortion is of such severity that needs to be corrected.

This disorder often occurs with other eye problems of focus, such as myopia or hyperopia, which may aggravate the problems of those who suffer it, so that they may show a major difficulty for near vision (astigmatism + hyperopia) or far vision (astigmatism + myopia)

How to face astigmatism

It is important for everyone involved in the process of physical and intellectual development of children (parents, teachers, monitors, etc.) to be alert to possible symptoms of astigmatism, so this problem can be corrected in serious cases. Equally important is the approach that adults provide in case a child has to wear corrective glasses. According to it, they will be well accepted or rejected.

In the same way, astigmatism can produce psychological problems in older people affected if they not accept the use of corrective glasses or they consider them unattractive.

Control is needed in astigmatism, because it can be a cause of headache, fatigue, irritation, or other physical problems.

Symptoms of astigmatism

The main symptoms of astigmatism are: distorted vision, double or blurred vision, headache, sore eyes after squinting, eyes swollen, red eyes, tired eyes, ability to focus the view on a nearby object, but with the corresponding fatigue eye, etc.

Causes of astigmatism

Astigmatism is caused by a malformation of the cornea. The cornea is a curved transparent membrane covering the front of the eye. The role of the corneal lens is to allow the light rays falling within the appropriate point on the retina. In a “normal” eye a well-functioning cornea has a uniform curvature, so it can focus on things properly. The light rays strike at what is known as a center of the retina.

When the cornea is irregular in curvature, it is impossible for rays of light to focus properly, so that focus problems appear, causing this disorder.

What causes malformation of the cornea?

It is not know exactly the reasons that may cause irregularities in the cornea, while mentioning some possible causes such as:

Heredity: People who have relatives with astigmatism are more likely to have this condition.

Bad habits for the eyes: eye strain when reading under dim light, reading too close objects, extend the reading for too long, etc. can be factors that help develop astigmatism.

Diseases affecting the eye: They include, for example:

– Chalazion, that is a kind of cyst that occurs on the eyelid as a result of obstruction of a gland that lubricates the eye. This extrusion presses on the cornea and can cause astigmatism.

– Keratoconus, that is a disorder in the shape of the cornea, in which it appears very thin and outgoing.

– The wounds or infections on the cornea can produce hard crusts or sores that may affect the shape or thickness of the same

How to prevent astigmatism?

Although astigmatism is impossible to prevent, many experts recommend a series of tips that can help improve or slow its progress. Among them we can mention the following:

Avoid stress or eye strain and make relaxation techniques.

Maintain a proper diet, rich in natural foods with a lot of vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C) and minerals (zinc, calcium, magnesium and selenium) and avoid the most toxic substances such as alcohol or tobacco. This diet has antioxidant properties and helps eliminate free radicals.

Reduce the near work, or at least avoid long periods of focus at close range. Do appropriate pauses now and then, while reading, while working on the computer or performing some task that involves looking at something at close range. It is also advisable to make changes in focus near-far as we are working, this is especially necessary when focusing near at screens. Pauses should be taken to focus on distant objects.

Use good lighting at work or appropriate lenses to avoid eye strain.

Diagnosis and treatment of astigmatism

Any eye problem first requires a visit to the ophthalmologist who will perform the relevant examinations to diagnose the real causes of the disorder. A diagnosis of astigmatism generally implies review of visual acuity (vision of letters on a Snellen chart), and an eye revision with an ophthalmometer, with which your doctor will check the actual state of your cornea.

Most cases of astigmatism are not severe enough to require treatment. When requested, you can wear glasses or contact lenses (cylindrical lenses) to get focus on things properly. Contact lenses are more effective than glasses. If astigmatism is present along with nearsightedness or farsightedness cylinder or spherical lenses should be used to correct all problems.

The patient may also opt for surgery (LASIK) laser to correct the shape of the cornea and achieve a proper focus. This allows proper vision without glasses or contact lenses.

This type of operation can only be performed on people whose eyes have become the ultimate size and people who do not have other eye problems such as vision in one eye, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, etc. Is not recommended in infants or pregnant women or people with diabetes or with a weakened immune system .

The natural treatment of astigmatism is aimed to use a series of remedies that can help delay the onset of the disorder or to improve their development
