Tamarind toxicity


Tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) is a medicinal tree native to the African savannah, mainly used to treat disorders of the digestive system.

Used for its laxative, choleretic, refreshing, tonic, vermifuge, anthelmintic, antibacterial and diuretic.

Can tamarind be toxic?

No toxic compounds have been detected in the tamarind. Consumption of tamarind and herbal treatments are safe with this plant when they respect the indicated doses.

Tamarind for pregnant women and infants

There are no scientific studies that support the safe use of this plant in women during pregnancy and lactation.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are cautioned not to take tamarind preparations.
