Gouty arthritis diet
Uric acid and gout
Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals, especially in the big toe. Uric acid is formed as a result of degradation in the body of purines.
Therefore, those who do not have a suitable kidney power to eliminate uric acid will have to be obliged to undertake a low purine diet or to eat a type of food that can stimulate the kidneys in order to eliminate uric acid.
Adequate food for gout
Suitable food for gout diet is made of those food containing low purines or suitable principles for the kidney to eliminate uric acid.
Tips to avoid or improve gout
- Drink plenty of water: Water helps kidneys to dissolve uric acid crystals and expel them from the body. You should drink at least a couple of liters a day.
- Drink mineral water with a weak mineralization: This type of water contains very few minerals, so it should primarily used as Water diet, because it stimulates kidney function and promotes diuresis. These properties make it ideal for sick people or for people who have a tendency to develop kidney stones, for sufferers from rheumatism or gout or those with digestive problems.
- Control your obesity: Obesity produces more uric acid and therefore must be controlled. But we must not make very strong diets since the also could increase uric acid. (See Low-fat diets)
Foods to avoid
Inappropriate foods for gout diet are those high in purines, which are transformed into uric acid, leading the body to a state of super saturation of this acid (hyperuricemia).
The following table shows a list of appropriate and inappropriate foods for uric acid:
