In the right dose, hyssop does not have adverse effects or toxicity. In certain cases it can cause irritation of the respiratory tract, as a component of essential oil, marrubiin, can cause irritation of mucous and bronchospasm.

In high doses, the plant can cause side effects such as drowsiness, seizures and sensory effects associated with psychological disorders.

  • Increased bleeding: Because of its emmenagogue properties, the plant is NOT suitable for women with heavy menstruation problems or endometriosis.
  • Epilepsy: The plant can produce attacks on people with epilepsy, because of its thujone content and pinocamfona.
  • Seizures: The essential oil is convulsant.

The use of hyssop essential oil is potentially toxic and it is contraindicated in internal use (ingestion) in any preparation.

Hyssop for pregnancy and lactation

  • Pregnancy: Because of its abortive properties, hyssop preparations are contraindicated during pregnancy. Hyssop contains thujone, alphathujone, betathujone and oleanolic acid, all components capable of inducing labor or miscarriage. (Among these components, the most abundant and is toxic thujone).
  • Children: Not a suitable plant use in children. The therapeutic dose for an adult may be toxic in a child. (Refer to the pediatrician).
  • Lactation toxic components of the essential oil of the plant can reach the baby through breast milk.
