What is golden seal used for?

Golden seal (Hydrastis canadiensis) is a plant with numerous uses in herbal medicine.

Among its most important applications, it is used to treat:

  • Digestive disorders (indigestion)

  • Conjunctivitis

  • For women

  • Mouth ulcers

  • Varicose veins

  • Hemorrhoids

  • Constipation

  • To stop bleeding.

Contraindications of golden seal

  • Pregnancy and lactation: Golden seal should not be taken during pregnancy and lactation because it can cause brain damage in the baby (kernicterus). * More information: Plants and pregnancy.

  • Children under 15 years: due to its alkaloid content, this remedy is not suitable for children under 15 years of age.

  • People with plant allergy may be allergic to golden seal.

  • Hypertension: the gold seal can vary blood pressure. Do not take golden seal if you have hypertension.

  • Heart disease: people who have suffered a stroke, or who have cardiovascular diseases, should abstain from taking this plant.

  • Diabetes and glaucoma: the alkaloids of the plant cause the constriction of the capillaries, which gives virtues to stop bleeding. However, these properties do not fit in the case of diabetes and glaucoma, since they can negatively affect the capillaries of sight.

  • Autoimmune diseases: it is not recommended to take people with multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus.

  • Medicines: Golden seal has contraindications with various medicines. Check with your doctor before taking this plant if you are under medication.

Some of the contraindicated drugs are: digoxin, liver drugs, amitriptyline, clozapine, codeine, fluoxetine, meperidine, ondansetron, lovastatin and triazolam, among others.
