Foods to avoid in the Helicobacter pylori diet

Foods that are harmful to the stomach

Some foods are very harmful to the stomach, especially when suffering from a condition such as gastritis, stomach pain, heartburn, or ulcers. These are conditions that are often related to infection by the Helicobacter pylori bacteria.

The foods that are most harmful to the stomach are:

  • piper
Spices such as pepper are not recommended

Tomatoes, peppers and citrus fruits: For some people, they are very acidic or spicy, slightly irritating, and usually upset the stomach when there is gastritis., especially if consumed on an empty stomach or in large quantities. It should be noted that these foods do not normally cause gastritis or pain, but they can irritate the mucosa when it’s not in good condition. It’s recommended to temporarily reduce or avoid consumption of these foods until the infection passes.

  • Eating too much salt: Salted foods, pre-cooked foods, pizzas, sausages, pickles, etc. cause stomach pain.
  • Fried foods: Like nuts or chips, in addition to the excess salt, they are very difficult to digest.
  • Avoid using too many spices: Very spicy foods or foods with too many aromatic herbs can be irritating to the stomach.
  • Large meals, especially those rich in protein (meat, cheese, fatty fish, or seafood), are also harmful. Many fats are also harmful, such as sauces, mayonnaise, fried foods, chips, chocolates, etc. Fat delays gastric emptying and causes food and gastric acids to remain in the stomach for a long time, causing heaviness, stomach pain, and gas.
  • Not chewing food: This causes food to remain in the stomach for a long time. The more thoroughly a food is chewed and the more ground it reaches the stomach, the greater the surface area between the food and gastric juices, the better they can work, and the easier it is to digest.
  • Cola and carbonated drinks: Carbonated drinks are irritating and acidic (due to phosphoric acid). One of the most suitable substitutes may be isotonic drinks or non-acidic juices (bottled apple, peach, or pineapple juice).
  • Alcohol
    coffe
Avoid drinking coffee in case of gastritis

, coffee, and tobacco. If you drink tea, very high concentrations should be avoided and it is preferable to use green or white tea rather than black tea.

  • Late night eating or eating very late: Heavy meals at night are very indigestible. It’s better to eat something light a couple of hours before going to bed than to eat very late. Large late-night meals can cause pain and difficulty sleeping.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or other medications without medical supervision: These medications could increase bleeding or heartburn. You should not self-medicate or take medications without your doctor’s consent and inform them of your stomach problem.
  • Do not lie down immediately after eating, especially if you have eaten too much: It’s best to walk around for 10 minutes after eating, and if you want to lie down, do so with your head elevated (keeping your upper body elevated) and preferably on your left side. That is, if you sleep on your side, sleep on your left arm. This recommendation is because the exit from the stomach to the intestine is located on the right side of the body. Sleeping on your left side places your stomach behind your esophagus, and the sphincter between your stomach and your intestines doesn’t have as much pressure from food and stomach acids.
