Is ecologic healthier?

Are ecological foods better that non-ecological?

Are organic foods healthier?

All healthy foods, such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals, tubers, dried fruits or virgin oils, are healthy whether they are organic or not, because they have a very similar nutrient content.

The ecological ones are richer in some nutrients

Scientific studies support that organic foods have a slightly higher content in some vitamins and minerals.

Higher vitamin C and potassium levels have been detected in organic vegetables, compared to conventionally grown vegetables, in some cases, up to twice the content.

Ecological grass meat has a higher protein content (+ 2.6% in eggs and + 7.8% in meat) than meat from industrial farms.

Are all the ecological foods healthy?

So far we have talked about organic natural foods, that is to say, non-processed food.

But there are products that have the seal of organic farming that have the same disadvantages than non-ecological ones, for its excessive contribution in salt, bad fats, sugars or flours: sausages, cold meats,  hamburgers, cookies, pastries, pizzas, drinks with alcohol, etc.

Is  ecological  food better for the planet?

In addition to their possible nutritional benefits, organic foods are consumed because theoretically they must be more respectful with the planet and have sustainable production principles.

Likewise, in terms of ecology, it is important to also talk about local foods, since large exports of organic food would be incoherent given the carbon expense generated by this transport.

Many people understand that ecological food is one that has a certificate called Organic Farming. However, the concept of organic eating is far from what that seal means.

This seal guarantees that those foods have been produced 100% with phytosanitary products, fertilizers, antibiotics and pesticides, of natural origin, not synthetic.

What is an organic product?

In the first place, agriculture, by definition, is never 100% ecological, because it always modifies the ecosystem destroying plants and animals to grow other more interesting edible plants.

Therefore, it must be understood that agriculture always has an impact on the ecosystem, especially extensive fields, even if they are ecologically certified crops.
