What are the side effects of chamomile?

Prolonged or excessive use of chamomile can cause dizziness and vomiting.

– The fresh plant can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive people.

– In certain hypersensitive or allergic individuals the prolonged use or overuse of chamomile can provoke dizziness, conjunctivitis, nervous unrest and gastric disorders (diarrhea and vomiting).

The active substances of chamomile may interact with drugs. It increases the effect of sedative substances (benzodiazepines and anxiolytics) and has an additive effect with coumarin anticoagulants (warfarin).

How much chamomile should be taken to avoid side effects?

Internal use of camomile

– The Commission E recommends, provided there is no medical contraindication, infusions of up to 3g of whole dried flower head, three to four times a day between meals.

– As a safe and effective anti-inflammatory infusion up 3g of the entire head of dry flower in 250ml of boiling water, take three to four times daily.

External use of camomile

– Washes, lotions, enemas, etc..: 12 to 50g per 1 liter of chamomile water.
