Home remedies for conjunctivitis: How to treat conjunctivitis with natural products?

The primary role of phytotherapy in the treatment of conjunctivitis involves using a number of plants with the following objectives:

- Anti-inflammatory plants, to relax tired eyes

- Bactericidal and antiviral plants, to remove germs.

- Nutritive plants that provide the nutrients needed for a good health of the eyes.

External use preparations to treat conjunctivitis

- Chamomile: (Matricaria chamomilla) It is particularly suitable as a natural eye drop. Because of its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory components, as well as for caffeic and linoleic acids. Both of them can inhibit reductase an enzyme in the human body which excessive presence can cause body injury, especially in the eyes, (15-minute infusion of a spoonful of dry flowers in a cup of water. - Cucumbers (Cucumis sp) One of many interesting applications of the cucumber is its ability to relax tired eyes, moistening and soothing redness. The application of a pair of freshly cut cucumber slices on the eyelids, is a good natural eye drops and a good solution to reduce swelling.

- Green tea (Camellia sinensis) It diminishes inflammation and rest your eyes. (Wet compresses with the infusion of a spoonful of dried plant per cup of water). (A good trick to relax the eyes and prevent the redness caused by conjunctivitis is to apply the same bag of tea infusion over your closed eyes for 10 minutes)

- Celandine (Chelidonium majus) Celandine decoctions for eye pads are one of the best remedies for tired eyes or presbyopia, ocular inflammation and conjunctivitis. Celandine is also effective against styes, which are inflammations of the glands of the eyelashes (A suitable decoction for the eyes with this plant is made with 15g. per liter of fresh leaves. Decoction for 2 minutes and apply with a pad or cotton).

- Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Pomegranate is adequate in external use for the treatment of skin diseases for its antibacterial and astringent properties to promote healing and protect against infection (decoction of three tablespoons of dried bark per liter of water for 10 minutes. Dilute the liquid on 50% water and flush the eyes with the liquid.)

- Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) Because of its bactericidal properties, it is very interesting in the external treatment of conjunctivitis produced by bacteria. (Infusion of 1 tablespoonful of dried leaves per liter of water. Wash your eyes with this liquid)

- Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) Foeniculum relieves irritated or tired eyes (Squeeze the tender plant on a gauze and apply a little juice on the eyes) (A good trick to relax the eyes and prevent redness caused for conjunctivitis is to apply the same bag of fennel infusion over your closed eyes for 10 minutes)

- Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) It reduces inflammation and relaxes the eyes (Apply water of witch hazel on the affected eyes)

- Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) Used externally, it has astringent and vulnerary properties. (Apply with a swab the liquid from the infusion of one teaspoonful of dried plant per cup of water)

- Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) Eyebright has been used for many years to treat eye diseases. It avoids eye watering and reduces inflammation of the eyes. (Make an infusion with 2 tablespoonfuls of the plant in half a liter of water. Allow to cool and apply a wet gauze over your eyes)

- Red vine (Vitis vinifera) It is very useful for the inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye to apply a little water coming from a fresh branch. It reduces itching or pain in the eyes. (Make a cut on a branch and apply a drop just as it drops from it. (Do not store this liquid because it goes off soon. We must apply it immediately)

- Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) Eye drops prepared with this plant are very useful in the treatment of conjunctivitis.

- Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) In case of conjunctivitis, you can use an infusion of one teaspoon of petals in half a liter of water. Filter well and wash your eyes with this mixture.

- Clover (Trifolium pratense) Used externally, it has astringent properties which are useful in the treatment of wounds that are difficult to cure. (Clean the area with an infusion of a teaspoon of dried leaves per cup of water) This same property can be used to treat inflamed or sore eyes or to diminish irritation or itching eye in conjunctivitis.
