FOOD TIPS TO REDUCE AND PREVENT URIC ACID INCREASE

Avoid uric acid and purines

In hyperuricemia it is important to normalize the level of uric acid in the blood. Factors such as a state of overweight or obesity should be solved when levels of uric acid are standardized and stable.

Ovo-lacto vegetarian diet is the most recommended diet if you suffer from uric acid since it can diminish the level of purines.

Control your protein intake

Do not perform low-protein diets, since one of the endogenous factors that generate the accumulation of uric acid in the blood is just the catabolization of our body's own proteins. This process is activated by prolonged fasting, but also by a deficiency of protein intake.

We should not perform very high protein diets, since a high intake of protein has acidifying effect on the body and can worsen this condition. A protein deficiency can produce the same results. Therefore, protein intake should be adequate.

Reduce saturated fats

There are different types of fats and not all of them are discouraged. Consumption of saturated fats, trans fats and hydrogenated foods should be monitored and / or avoid, because, when uric acid levels are elevated, they are supposed to increase the chance of developing cardiovascular diseases. We will choose skimmed dairy products and derivatives.

We specially need monounsaturated fats such as olive oil and polyunsaturated fats such as fish oil, flaxseed oil, walnut oil, eating nuts etc.

Choose complex carbohydrates

Carbohydrate intake should be the same than in a balanced diet, but foods that contain complex carbohydrates should be preferential versus simple sugars.. Therefore, we must control simple carbs intake.

Avoiding sucrose and fructose

Avoid sugar intake and excessive consumption of fruits (you can take one or two fruits a day). Because of their sugar content, both can raise blood triglyceride levels. Besides, they can also cause or worsen a state of obesity.

One way to facilitate and remember the purine-rich foods, is to remember those foods that are rich in cholesterol.

Avoid fasting

To avoid long periods of time without providing food (fasting) it is recommended to schedule your meal times, with a minimum of three meals a day or, if possible, it is preferable to distribute them in five meals: breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack and dinner.

We will avoid a state of hyperketonemia and acidification by preventing our liver glycogen store to remain empty, which will refrain the liver to begin to mobilize fat.

Sufficient and appropriate fluid intake

- Uric acid diet should be diuretic, with a good balance between potassium intake (high) and sodium (low), so consumption will heighten the recommended vegetables and will limit the consumption of salt added in food and food preparations.

- We also will provide a sufficient amount of fluid that allows accumulated toxins to be removed easily, before some deficiencies in kidney function as an acute or chronic renal failure may appear..

- We will drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day. We can drink sparkling water, herbal tea and vegetable broths. We also can drink coffee and tea, provided that our blood pressure is not higher than normal.

- Avoid fruit juice because fruit juice must be limited and it is preferable to consume whole fruit, since it contains more fiber.

- Also avoid the consumption of alcohol, which completely paralyzes the elimination of uric acid that accumulates in your body

Choose basifying foods

Feeding should the preferential consumption of foods with basifying effect in our body, compared to those who will acidify. Whereupon, increased diuresis and the elimination of uric acid, avoid acidification of the blood, prevent kidney damage and other tissues of the body (to prevent acidification of these), and the consequences that entails.

Enhance prebiotics and probiotics

The status of the intestinal flora may be affected or diminished, so that it may not exercise its action of eliminating uric acid as it should. We can promote the consumption of living bacteria to repopulate it. The consumption of yogurt is recommended for its probiotic effect.

Fiber intake must be achieved by eating nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, flax, etc..) We can not advice eating cereals in its integral form, for their content in purines. Thus, prebiotics will bring the benefits of fiber without increasing the purine content in our diet.
