Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a plant of the Papilionaceae family, the same family where alfalfa or chickpea belong.

The plant contains isoflavones with estrogenic effects, which are used to treat menopausal symptoms. It also has anti-cancer, diuretic and demulcent properties.

Red clover can be used safely as food in the established amounts. Its medicinal use is recommended to be carried out under medical prescription.

It is rich in phytoestrogens, coumarins and salicylic acid, with anticoagulant and analgesic properties.

Since it t contains oxalates, it should not be taken by people with kidney stones.

What are the contraindications of red clover?

Pregnancy and lactation: the plant is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation because it contains phytosterols, with estrogenic and abortifacient properties.

Anticoagulants: the plant contains coumarin and salicylic acid components able to thin the blood, so, when combined with anticoagulant medications or blood thinners plants, can heighten the effect and cause bleeding.

– Metrorrhagia, breast cancer, uterine cancer and other cancer types: cancers and health situations with hormone estrogen sensitivity can be sensitive to clover, which is contraindicated because it contains phytoestrogens.
