What are plums and what benefits do they bring us?

Plums are eaten raw or used in cooking to make recipes.

Plum is a fruit of a plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Plums are traditionally considered to be highly cleansing and antioxidant fruits. Nutritionally it stands out that they provide a high water content (they hydrate us), they are rich in fiber, vitamin C and bioflavonoids.

What contraindications do plums have?

Most people can eat plums without suffering any health problems. They can be eaten fresh or in recipes such as cakes, jams and homemade desserts.

However, some people have personal intolerances which cause certain contraindications.

The main contraindications of plums are mentioned below to prevent possible adverse effects of their consumption.

Plum allergy or allergy to LTP

People with a plum allergy should not consume plums. This kind of allergy is very common in the Mediterranean basin.

These people are allergic to components of plums (proteins) called LTP defense protein. This protein, present mainly in the plum skin, can produce a whole series of exaggerated immune reactions in the person with allergy, up to causing anaphylactic shock.

People with an allergy to plums also have allergies to other fruits due to cross reactions between fruit trees of the same family (Rosaceae), such as apricots, apples, cherries, peaches, pears, strawberries, etc.

Oral allergy syndrome to plums

It is an allergic reaction different from the previous one. In sensitive people, plums can cause oral allergy syndrome (OAS), which is characterized by swelling in the mouth, tongue or roof of the mouth or itching in the oropharynx.

It is advisable to avoid consuming plums when these symptoms occur because the symptoms can become severe in some cases, for example causing the impediment of breathing.

Plums and diet FODMAPs

Because of its high content of fructose and polyols, plums should be avoided if you follow a diet low in FODMAPs, which is a type of diet used in dietotherapy to treat irritable bowel syndrome or irritable colon syndrome.

Plums in the diet for DAO deficiency migraine

According to the food theory that treats migraine, which is quite successful in it treatment and is already being implemented in hospitals, plums do not have histamine, and therefore can be consumed in the diet for migraine.
