Natural antibacterials
What does antibacterial mean?
A principle is said to be antibacterial when it is able to eliminate bacteria or inhibit their growth, without causing harm to the infected organism.
Antibacterial agents are classified as follows:
- Bactericides, when they destroy invading bacteria.
- Bacteriostatics, when they inhibit their growth, that is, they prevent bacteria from developing.
There are also official medications with antibacterial properties.
How do antibacterials work?
Antibacterial agents act on bacteria in different ways. For example:
- By acting on the cell wall of bacteria: to prevent its growth or to destroy it. In this way, the bacteria can be attacked and eliminated by these principles.
- By acting on the cell membrane: making it permeable, so that the principles can enter its interior.
- By acting on the DNA of bacteria: in this way the cells are damaged and die.
- By acting on ribosomes: these are responsible for synthesizing proteins.
