Turmeric(Curcuma longa) is a rhizome of the same family as ginger. It is used in large quantities in Asian cooking, especially in curries, which forms the basis.

Although its name may be unknown, the fact is that it is widely used as a color additive by the food industry for decades, in mayonnaise, margarine, potatoes, pate, mustard, juices, etc. Its name is curcumin additive in Europe E-100.

Benefits of cooking with turmeric

Turmeric has antioxidant and digestive properties. Its consumption has benefits for the stomach and liver. It is recommended for people with slow digestion or gases. Frequent consumption helps prevent cancer.

It has a neutral taste, slightly bitter, which, when mixed with other ingredients, is almost imperceptible. For this reason, turmeric can be added to all kinds of dishes and recipes, which will contribute to an attractive color and all its benefits, virtually unchanged flavor.

What kind of dishes can turmeric be used?

Turmeric can be added easily in ordinary food:

  • You can add 1 to 2 tablespoons turmeric to rice, pasta, vegetables, etc. after being boiled and drained.
  • Add 1 or 2 tablespoons turmeric to mashed vegetables, creamed vegetables, etc.
  • Add turmeric to curry sauce, pesto, tomato sauce, homemade pates, breaded, etc.
  • Sprinkle turmeric within the sandwich.

Where to buy turmeric?

The truth is that, following the discovery of the properties of this spice, it is increasingly sought by consumers and turmeric and can be found in usual supermarkets, health food stores, natural food and markets.

Attention should be paid, especially when purchased in bulk, not to buy tartrazine, an artificial food coloring derived from petroleum, which has been linked to the onset of hyperactivity in children, allergies and other adverse effects.
